Was won by the women, by an embarrassing margin.  As usual..

Club Membership Mixed Pairs (September 20 and 21)

Both members of each day's the winning team will get half their membership fee paid by the club.

  • The winners on Day 1: George Gibson and Emily Lawson - This was after exciting playoffs between 3 top tied teams, the others being Hubert Poschmann/Laurel Stanton  and Mary Prade/Glen McCord .
  • The winners on Day 2: Anne Ashdown and Ed Lachance. Second: Warren Nolte/Shirley Cole.


George Gibson Mixed Triples at Parksville (Sept 17/18)

Parksville teams came in first, third and fourth with Courtenay second.

The prizes were presented by George Gibson, who sponsored this event.

Weather went well, the Green was good - what more could we ask (except more wins for Nanaimo,  of course).

North Island Zone Mixed Pairs - Stu Morrison trophy -  in Nanaimo (Sept 13/14)

It was very close with 3 teams winning all of their games. The winners were decided on ENDS.
Gold:    Vern Greenhill and Melie Ursulom of  Courtenay  -   8 points  37 ends
 
Silver:  Rick Quibell and Mary Roughton of  Nanaimo  -    8 points 32 ends
 
3rd place and honorable mention - Gary and Jody Robinson of  Parksville with 8 points  27 ends.
 
It was very close with 3 teams winning all of their games. The winners were therefore, decided on ENDS. The games were very close, many losing by 1 or 2 points and some in the last end. It made it very exciting for the audience!

North Island Zone Singles

 Rick Quibell was runner-up in the Men's Singles to  Robinson of Parksville.

Richard Teneycke was runner-up in the Men's Novice Singles to Peter Harding from Courtenay - they won the same number of games but Richard just lost on points..


Canadian Blind Sports National Championships and BC Blind Sports Provincial Championships in Courtenay (Sept 2-6)

Six bowlers from Nanaimo took part and they all competed well against some stiff competition. 
 
Nanaimo results were:
 
Randy Fred (totally blind) aided by Stan Dalzell - Gold Medal in both  Provincial and National Championships
 
Iris Ferguson (partially sighted) aided by Mary Dalzell - Gold Medal in both Provincial and National Championships
 
Kendrick Wall (partially sighted) aided by Tom Williams - Silver Medal in both Provincial and National Championships
 
Shirley Cole (partially sighted) aided by Marcia Williams & Byron Cole - Silver Medal in the Provincials + Bronze Medal in the National Championships.
 
Barry Henshall (B2) placed 4th in his category. Mike Rogers is Barry's director.
 
Brian Lawson (B3) placed 5th in his category. Emily Lawson works with Brian.
 
Ed McMillan, formerly of Courtenay LBC and now bowling out of Langley won Gold in both the Provincial and National Championships. Donn Sherry is Ed's director.

David Burns  directed Randy Kruzeniski, a totally blind novice bowler from North Delta, who won Silver Medals in both the Provincial and National Championships.
 
Shirley Cole, Kendrick Wall and Randy Fred each scored 4 Enders during the competition. This accomplishment has been submitted to Lawn Bowls Canada for possible recognition in the Greens Magazine.
 
Madeleine Sherry was presented the Joan McKay Trophy for her help and service to others during the tournament. This result is based on a vote by bowlers and volunteers of Courtenay Club.

Courtenay did a grand job, so did the provincial and national organisations. Even the weather held.



Bert Nelson Bowlspiel in Victoria (Aug 30-Sept 1)

This past Labour Day weekend several Club members entered the Bert Nelson Bowlspiel - a 32-team tournament run in a bonspiel format.  It took place Sat, Sun & Monday at the Victoria West Lawn Bowling Club.  Teams playing on Monday had to win their way there!
Nanaimo’s Jamie Bridge, Larry Williams & Kathleen Sherry won the "B" event. Our Monty Greer & Tom Renton and teammate Terry Delaney from the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club placed 3rd in the "C" event, Donna Williams skipped a team with 2 players from Victoria West Lawn Bowling Club.

Among others : Mary Bradford, Meg McGovern, Kathleen Sherry and Diane Ball in the kitchen; Mim Lee and Madeleine Sherry on cash; Mary Dalzell dealt with the onions for the hot-dog sale with Shirley Cole on cash - that raised a significant sum for the Visually Impaired section.

Provincial Pairs (Men's and Ladies') at Juan de Fuca (July 4-6)

Jamie Bridge & Larry Williams, and Kathleen Sherry & Donna Williams played in the tournament. Larry & Jamie did extremely well.  They advanced from the round robin into the playoff round and won their way into the bronze medal game.  After a valiant effort and some spectacular bowling they ended up 4th overall. Next year!





New Bowlers Day (July 5)

Under threatening skies though the weather held for us all day, 15 1st, 2nd and 3rd year bowlers had a challenging day. They started with a 10 end game with players rotating through each position. Bowlers next played 8 ends of Big 5 in which the 5 bowls closest to the jack each count1 point. We finished the day with a circuit of 6 skills.

1st Year Bowlers:

Visually Impaired Pairs competition at Richmond LBC (June 10, 2008)

The competition involved 2 10 end games. Eugene Amburg with director Len Robson partnered with Brian Lawson (director Bob McKenzie ) were the best for the day with 2 impressive wins. Also with 2 wins and placing 2nd were Howard Cordick and Kendrick Wall directed by Tom Williams. Pics from the event are in the Visually Impaired section.

  1. Kitty Gray and Kendrick Wall of Nanaimo with director Margaret Soothill went undefeated and were declared the Big Winners. 
  2. Second place went to Sam Simpson of Qualicum ( director David Burton ) and Randy Fred of Nanaimo (director Stan Dalzell) who were the only other team to win 2 games.
