MINUTES OF THE NANAIMO LAWN BOWLING CLUB

EXECUTIVE AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS

SEPTEMBER 15, 2008

 

The meeting was called to order by President Paul Roughton at 6:56 p.m.

 

PRESENT – Paul Roughton, Kate Wilson, Jimmy Muller, Joan Nolte, George Gibson, Warren Nolte, David Towns and Hubert Poschmann.

 

APOLOGIES – Mary Roughton, Jamie Bridge

 

MINUTES – Minutes of the August 18th meeting were approved as circulated. Moved by Kate, 2nd by David.  No business arising from the minutes.

 

TREASURERS REPORT – Mary Roughton absent. Report was circulated as follows.

            Bank balance @ August 31, 2008

            General Account $ 13,412.86

            Gaming Account $ 90.45

            GIC $ 18,348.34

                        TOTAL $ 31,851.55

 

New Shelving has been installed in the Bowls Shed @ $256.53.

Moved by Kate, 2nd by Joan the Treasurers report be adopted and submitted for file.

Donn Sherry – Congratulations on being inducted into the Nanaimo Sports Hall of Fame.

Thank you card to Fred Gilpins family for donating Fred’s Bowls to the Sight Impaired.

 

DIRECTORS REPORTS:

COACHING – In Donn Sherry’s absence the report was read by George and submitted for file.

Donn reported Coaching is finished for the year. It has been a successful year.

Donn felt the Club got good value from the new Coaches that qualified for the season.

 

SIGHT IMPAIRED REPORT – Donn Sherry – submitted Report for file as read by George.

Thanks to the effort of Shirley Cole the Wellington Pub Meat Draw netted $1,825.00 which has been deposited in the Club’s Gaming Account for future use by the Blind members.

Donn submitted for file copies of necessary documents needed for this event.

Our Blind bowlers did well in the Provincial and National Championships in Courtney.

Iris Ferguson and Randy Fred both won Gold medals in the Provincial and National Competitions. Kendrick Wall won a Silver medal in each competition. Shirley Cole won Silver in the Provincials and Bronze in the Nationals. Barry Henshall and Brian Lawson both played well but did not win medals.

 

GAMES – George Gibson- reports read and submitted for file.

The Greens will be open for Open Draws Monday to Friday in the afternoon at 1:15 and evening at 6:00 p.m. for September 15 to 19th and September 22 to 26th, with the exception of Tues. afternoon when the Men’s Draw will still be played.

The Leagues are now completed.

The upcoming Club Competitions are showing good interest.

This is the final tally for the 2008 season.

GREENS: Jamie Bridge, absent.

 

CANTEEN & HOUSE: Hubert Poschmann

Hubert reported everything appeared to be going well. He will make sure there are enough supplies in for the upcoming events.

Hubert submitted his resignation for the end of September, as he will be having to spend more time in Victoria with his ill wife.

 

WAYS & MEANS: David Towns

David reported his canvassing for donations went well for the year.

 

GENERAL DISCUSSION

Warren gave a run down on how he handled the Lockers this year and felt it was successful.

Jimmy suggested we have signs put up to “Remove Bowls from the Shed before Lock Up” Sept. 30th.

We will need help on Oct. 4th and 5th to prepare the greens for winter.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

Discussion on the availability of Bowls Shed Keys for sale.

 

Policy re. Animals – Motion made by David, 2nd by Warren that:

            No dogs in Club House. Sign to be made up.

            Dogs can be on the grounds if on a leash.

 

Books on Lawn Bowling - There are lots on hand, can be used for tournament prizes.

 

Drake Pride Bowls won by our Club for being in the top four in Canada, for our increase in Membership – It was decided an inventory should be taken as to what sizes we have in our Club stock before requesting the size to be delivered.            Tabled to the next meeting.

 

George informed the group that the AGM meeting for Bowls BC was being held at12 p.m. Nov. 8/08 at Granville Park, Vancouver.

 

Jimmy reported John Ward had offered to head the committee to look after the Greens next summer, but he would need instruction how to look after them. Discussion followed about equipment for the Greens. It was suggested it would benefit us to have a Slicer.

 

David reported he had booked the Curling Rink for the AGM Bowls Meeting for Nov. 30th 2008. Meeting at 3:00 p.m., Refreshments 5:00 p.m., Buffet Dinner at 5:30 p.m. The price of the meal has not been established yet by the Curling Club, but would be approximately $17.00 per person. Discussion on how we can determine the correct number of people paying for the meal, as there has been some discrepancy in the past.

 

Kate brought forth a question from David Burns as to whether we would like the minutes to go on the NLBC Web Site. Kate moved we should put the minutes on the Web Site, 2nd by George. Motion passed.

 

Past Pres. Jimmy appointed Vernie Dawkin as the Member who will fill in for Warren on “Membership” until the elections are held at the AGM.on Nov. 30th/08. Warren has resigned as of the 30th of September, because of wintering in the USA.  Vernie was in attendance.

 

Pres. Paul brought color patches to choose a color for the “Set Markers” used for Tournaments. A deep yellow was decided on. Pres. Paul will look after having the Markers ready for next year.

 

Sunshine Lady report – A card was sent to Mim Lee re. surgery.

 

Next meeting is scheduled for October 20th at 7 p.m. at the Senior Centre, Room 1.
